Holiday Fun Continues in Galveston with Expanded Downtown Lanterns & Lights Event

GALVESTON, Texas (Nov. 21, 2018) – After the opening of ICE LAND and Festival of Lights at Moody Gardens last week, Galveston will continue in the spirit of the season with more holiday events taking place in the historic downtown district this weekend.

An expanded Downtown Lanterns and Lights will kick off Saturday at 6 p.m. at Saengerfest Park with a free event featuring acrobats, entertainers, music – and snow! This year’s display will feature a 30-foot-tall façade of Jacob Marley’s office building as depicted in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol amid lights, decorations and a Christmas tree.

Downtown Lanterns and Lights will run nightly through Jan. 1 and will include an interactive photo frame and a giant snow globe for visitors to enjoy on designated weekends. The lights are part of a major décor overhaul encompassing the main corridors of the island’s charming, 36-block historic downtown district. Lights will stretch throughout downtown from 20th to 25th streets on The Strand as well as 20th to 23rd streets along Postoffice Street.

The Grand 1894 Opera House will kick off its holiday lineup Saturday at 8 p.m. when the 10-time Grammy Award winners Asleep at the Wheel return to the stage with its popular holiday-themed, toe-tappin’ concert series “Merry Texas Christmas, Y’all!” The entertainment continues Sunday at 7 p.m. when The Priests bring their Irish tenor voices to the stage.

Also, visitors with a flair for the creative can get some holiday shopping done while enjoying an evening of free art viewing and hors d’oeuvres amid the beautiful Victorian architecture of historic downtown Galveston during Artwalk from 6-9 p.m. this Saturday.
