Celebrate History in Galveston This May

Annual Historic Homes Tour and Vintage Beach Revue among Special Events Next Month

GALVESTON, Texas (April 1, 2014) Visitors to Galveston will be able to celebrate history this May with the return of two major special events: the 40th annual Galveston Historic Homes Tour and the Galveston Island Beach Revue.

These events are just the beginning of next month’s jam-packed calendar as the island prepares to kickoff summer.

40th Annual Historic Homes Tour
Rich in history and standing as a testament to survival, the Galveston Historic Homes Tour will return for its 40th year the first two weekends in May. The tour will feature homes located throughout the island’s vibrant historic neighborhoods. This special event, organized by the Galveston Historical Foundation, gives the public a chance to tour the inside of private residences and homes that have been recently restored. The tour will take place May 3-4 and May 10-11. For ticket information, visit www.galvestonhistory.org.

Galveston Island Beach Revue
Retro swimwear is chic and vintage is king at the Galveston Island Beach Revue, which will take place for its sixth year May 16-17. Contestants from across the country will compete in the event’s new location at Beach Central, right on Galveston’s historic Seawall, modeling vintage and vintage-inspired swimwear that echoes the “good ole days” of Galveston's summertime history. Contestants will compete for cash prizes and top honors. This year, you won’t want to miss the Friday night kick-off featuring a retro movie on the big screen plus vendors and craft beer tastings on Saturday leading up to the Bathing Beauties Contest.  For details, visit www.galvestonbeachrevue.com.

Live Music at East Beach
Grab your beach gear and head to the island’s party beach for a free, live concert this summer. Join 94.5 The Buzz and Rod Ryan from 2-6 p.m. May 17 at the East Beach entertainment stage for Bands on the Beach presented by the Galveston Island Convention and Visitors Bureau and Bud Light. The event will feature local bands, food vendors, contests and prizes. Then enjoy regular concerts held from 3-6 p.m. every Sunday throughout the summer beginning May 25. Next month’s lineup includes Indiginis May 25. For more information about East Beach and the island’s other public beach parks, visit www.galvestonbeachinfo.com.

Yaga’s Wild Game BBQ Cook-off
Galveston is calling all backyard chefs, sportsmen and women, and outdoor enthusiasts to show off their culinary skills May 9-10 at the Yaga’s Wild Game BBQ Cook-off.  The event will take place at Pier 21, featuring a wild game cook-off, live entertainment, silent auction, “Run Wild 5K” and children’s activities. This event benefits the Yaga’s Children’s Fund. For details, visit www.ycfund.org.
