Galveston to Host New Texas Tequila & Margarita Festival, Annual Juneteenth Celebration Next Month

GALVESTON, Texas (May 1, 2014) – Visitors will be toasting to a good time in Galveston next month as the island hosts a variety of special events, including the first annual Texas Tequila & Margarita Festival and the island’s annual Juneteenth celebration.

This is just the beginning of June’s fun-filled calendar as the island buzzes with summertime festivities.

Texas Tequila & Margarita Festival
Texans love a “south of the border” experience, and they’ll get just that in Galveston June 13-15 with the first annual Texas Tequila & Margarita Festival at the Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa & Convention Center. This festival will include three days of fun with margarita tasting and sampling events, live music, vendors and even a fajita cook-off. For details, visit http://texasmargaritafestival.com/.

National Juneteenth Celebration
When you head to Galveston June 7-24, you’ll be coming home where it all began as the island hosts several days of festivities to celebrate  Juneteenth – a holiday that originated in this historic Texas beach town. This year’s festivities will include a variety of events, including festivals, picnics, African-American heritage exhibits, reenactments and concerts. The annual reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in front of the official Juneteenth monument will take place June 19 in Galveston to help commemorate June 19, 1865 – the date the last slaves were freed in the South. AIA Sandcastle Competition
For the 28th year, Houston area architects, designers, engineers, and contractors will take their tools to Galveston’s East Beach May 31 for one of the largest amateur sandcastle competitions in the United States. The Houston Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) sponsors this annual contest, in which the public is invited to watch teams compete for the best sandcastle design. Live Music at East Beach
Grab your beach gear and head to the island’s party beach for a free, live concert series from 3-6 p.m. every Sunday throughout the summer. Bands on the Sand at Moody Gardens
Moody Gardens may be known for its fascinating pyramids, but summertime at the popular adventure resort means Palm Beach – a kid’s water park and sand beach – is open! Moody Gardens will host its popular “Bands on the Sand” concert series at Palm Beach on weekends throughout the summer. Visitors can catch live beach concerts followed by a fireworks show on Friday and Saturday evenings June through August. For details, visit http://www.moodygardens.org/.

Galveston Back Garden Tour
If you need ideas on how to better beautify your garden, head to Galveston the second weekend in June for the Back Garden Tour. Organized by Clean Galveston, the event June 14-15 offers the public the chance to tour stunning botanical gardens nestled in the backyards of several private historic homes. Texas Beach Ultimate Fest
For fun in the sand, head to Galveston’s East Beach on June 7 for the Texas Beach Ultimate Fest, the longest-running beach disc sport event in the world. The public is invited to watch nearly 50 competitive Beach Ultimate teams battle for the championship. Visit http://houstonultimate.org/ for details.

Great Texas Catamaran Race
The afternoon of June 14, Galveston’s waters will be decorated with beautiful sail boats as the Great Texas Catamaran Race makes its way to Galveston’s East Beach for its final stretch.  The boats will sail to the finish at East Beach after traveling 300 miles from South Padre Island. The Great Texas Catamaran Race is one of the premier long distance beach cat races in the country. For more information on the Catamaran race visit http://www.gt300.com/.

Movie and Music Nights on The Strand
Grab your chairs, blankets and pillows, and head downtown Galveston for a free family friendly movie or concert this June. Movie Night on the Strand will take place at 7 p.m. June 7, showing the film Miracle at Saengerfest Park, located at the corner of 23rd and Strand streets. On the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month, visitors can catch free live concerts from 6-9 p.m. in Saengerfest Park. June 14 the park will feature the Dolly Rockers and Cottonwood Blossom. On June 28, it will feature the Noise Poets and Kevin Anthony.
