Galveston to Offer New Meeting Spaces, Upgraded Attractions to Group Market in 2017
GALVESTON, Texas (October 4, 2016) – Galveston’s historic charm and affordability as a beach destination won’t be the only things drawing the attention of meeting planners in 2017. That’s because the island has plenty of new offerings to buzz about, from new meeting spaces to multi-million-dollar attraction upgrades.
Here’s a rundown of all that’s new and upcoming in Galveston for 2017:
Galveston to Sport Beach Makeover for 2017 Summer Season
Galveston will be sporting a brand new beach makeover for the 2017 summer season. By the spring of next year, the island will complete a $19.5 million beach nourishment project on the island’s east end. The project will stretch along the seawall from 12th to 61st streets, offering four miles of upgraded recreational space for visitors to enjoy. Last year, Galveston opened “Babe’s Beach” – a newly created 15-block beach along the seawall west of 61st Street.www.galvestonbeachinfo.com
Moody Gardens to Unveil $37M Aquarium Renovation
One of Galveston’s most popular attractions is undergoing a massive makeover. The Moody Gardens Aquarium Pyramid is in the process of a $37 million, multi-phased renovation to be unveiled in May 2017. Upon completion, there will be a variety of new exhibits and surprises, including the addition of jellyfish and tropical penguins. The Moody Gardens aquarium is one of the largest and most diverse aquariums in the U.S., and features marine life from four regions of the world, including the Gulf of Mexico to South Atlantic, the South Pacific, the North Pacific and the Caribbean.www.moodygardens.org
Hotel Galvez, Tremont House to Unveil Upgrades
Hotel Galvez & Spa, the only beachfront, historic hotel on the Texas Gulf coast, will unveil a $1.8 million upgrade to its 224 guest rooms in December 2016. This makeover will renovate all guest bathrooms, adding new decorative shower surrounds, fixtures, tile floors, paint and artwork. In addition, Hotel Galvez’ downtown sister property, The Tremont House, will complete an upgrade to its popular Rooftop Bar in December 2016, expanding its seating areas to accommodate more guests. The bar, open evenings daily (weather permitting), offers views of Galveston’s historic downtown and harbor from the roof of the six-floor hotel.
Victorian-style Conservatory Opens at The Bryan Museum
For an event featuring classic Victorian charm, there is no place like the new Conservatory at The Bryan Museum. Opened in April 2016, this Victorian-style venue features a magnificent European design of intricate metal ironwork and beautiful emerald green glass. At 2,000 square feet, the Conservatory is nestled in lush gardens and opens onto an expansive stone terrace and vine-covered gazebo. The perfect setting for a private party or reception, the Conservatory can accommodate parties of 250 standing or 150-180 seated. www.thebryanmuseum.org
Galveston Now Home to World’s Tallest Water Coaster
Thrill seekers are in luck! Galveston recently became home to the world’s tallest water coaster. The new ride, MASSIV, opened at Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark during the summer of 2016, offering one of the most daring experiences across the globe. At 81 feet and six and three-quarter inches tall, MASSIV sends riders on several downhill and uphill thrills before blasting them into a refreshing pool. The entire ride lasts about 60 seconds. Moody Gardens Hotel Welcomes New Leadership
The Moody Gardens Hotel has welcomed several new members to its leadership team. Leon Garrison was brought on as the hotel’s new general manager in August 2016 to oversee the hotel’s operations that include 428 guestrooms, more than 103,000 square feet of convention center space and a full-service spa. Garrison previously served as the hotel’s rooms division manager. In addition, the hotel welcomed Salvador Navarrete as its new director of rooms and Chef Felipe Gonzalez as its new executive chef, bringing 30-plus years of experience in the food industry in both Texas and San Francisco.
