Dickens on The Strand Kicks Off This Weekend
Festival to Transform Downtown Galveston into Victorian London of Charles Dickens
GALVESTON ISLAND, Texas (November 30, 2016) – Dickens on The Strand will bring holiday charm to Galveston this weekend, transforming the island’s historic Strand into the Victorian London of Charles Dickens.
The popular street festival will kick off Friday and will continue through Sunday with a full lineup of special events, parades, live entertainment and special appearances from descendants of Charles Dickens.
Visitors to Dickens on The Strand can experience an enchanted journey back in time to 19th century London as characters from Dickens novels walk the streets and costumed vendors peddle their wares from street stalls and rolling carts laden with holiday food and drink, Victorian-inspired crafts, clothing, jewelry, holiday decorations and gifts. Strolling carolers and roving musicians will fill the area with enchanting sounds from another era as “steam punks” entertain the crowds.
Highlights of this year’s 43rd annual event, put on by the Galveston Historical Foundation, will include appearances from two of Charles Dickens’ descendants, Lucinda Dickens Hawksley and Jane Dickens Monk. In addition, there will be a new Friday night kickoff event, “A Grand Strand Soiree,” held at Hendley Green plus new entertainment and expanded parades throughout the festival.
