Beach Patrol Sheds Light on National Beach Safety Week with Reminders to Beachgoers
GALVESTON, Texas (May 22, 2019) – Beach season is officially upon us and millions of visitors are expected to visit Galveston Island beaches this summer for fun in the sun. While fun should be a priority, so should beach safety.
During National Beach Safety Week, May 20 – 27, the Galveston Island Beach Patrol is reminding the public of the following safety tips:
- Avoid rip currents – Stay away from rock jetties and piers
- Swim near a lifeguard
- Never swim alone
- Do not dive in headfirst
- Obey warning signs and flags
- Take sun and heat precautions (Free sunscreen stations available at Stewart Beach, East Beach and at Dellanera Park on the island’s west end)
Every day, the Galveston Island Beach Patrol raises flags that signal the condition of the water. To learn the meaning behind each flag’s color, visit www.galvestonbeachinfo.com/conditions.asp. There, you can also view real-time water quality reporting made available through Texas Beach Watch.
