Dickens on The Strand Festival To Bring Victorian Merriment to Historic Downtown Galveston
Victorian Festival Transforms Downtown Galveston into Victorian London of Charles Dickens
GALVESTON, Texas (December 1, 2014) – Dickens on The Strand will bring holiday charm to Galveston this weekend, transforming the island’s historic Strand into the Victorian London of Charles Dickens.
The popular street festival kicks off on Friday, Dec. 5 and will continue through Sunday with a full lineup of special events, parades, live entertainment and special appearances from descendants of Charles Dickens.
Visitors to Dickens on The Strand can experience an enchanted journey back in time to 19th century London as characters from Dickens novels walk the streets and costumed vendors peddle their wares from street stalls and rolling carts laden with holiday food and drink, Victorian-inspired crafts, clothing, jewelry, holiday decorations and gifts. Strolling carolers and roving musicians will fill the area with enchanting sounds from another era as “steam punks” entertain the crowds.
The festival, put on by the Galveston Historical Foundation, was expanded this year to feature a new special event from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday: Mr. Fezziwig’s Beer Hall. The event will include specialty acts and hearty brews hosted by Charles Dickens’ great-great-granddaughter Jane Monk. Also new this year, visitors can participate in Dinner With Dickens at the 1880 Garten Verein and Breakfast with Dickens at one of Galveston’s historic homes.
