GALVESTON ISLAND, Texas (September 23, 2015) – Galveston leaders are blazing a new trail in business partnership and conservation. Leaders from Galveston’s business community, natural resource professionals and community – wide have stepped forward to form the first 1% To Conserve Galveston Island™ Advisory Board.
The Board will be responsible for developing 1% To Conserve Galveston Island’s management systems for awarding funds to Island based conservation projects.
The newly formed Board members are: Melvin Williams; Minh Thach, City of Galveston, Julie Ann Brown, Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council; Karla Klay, Artist Boat; Bob Stokes, Galveston Bay Foundation; Robert Evans, The Emporium at Eibands; Amy Owens, Clay Cup Studio; Gina Spagnola, Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce; Mary Branum, Short Term Rental Owners Association of Galveston; Jennifer Lamm, Moody Gardens; Kelly DeSchaun, Galveston Island Park Board of Trustees; Chris Eberly, Gulf Coast Bird Observatory; Lindsey Lippert, Galveston Bay Estuary Program; Allison Buchtien, General Land Office; Cherie O’Brien, Texas Parks and Wildlife; and Jamie Schubert, NOAA.
1% to Conserve Galveston Island™ is a voluntary partnership with local businesses to create a local funding source for conservation projects on Galveston Island.
Any local area business such as restaurants, lodging, retail, professional services, real estate, recreation, regardless of home office location, may participate. Businesses who choose to participate will receive recognition advertising in area publications. Individuals who wish to participate may do so by frequenting those businesses that proudly support 1% To Conserve Galveston Island™.
The program has been funded by the Houston Endowment, Knobloch Family Foundation, Toyota Together Green and National Audubon Society; and endorsed by the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Galveston Island Park Board of Trustees.
